Yerevan /Mediamax/. Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian stated that denouncing or hindering realization of right of self-determination of nations can considerably result in new conflicts.

“Armenia has always stated and now states that realization of self-determination right is no reason for new conflicts. Vice versa, it can prevent new conflicts and contribute to establishing, maintaining and strengthening of regional and international peace”, said Edward Nalbandian commenting on the Independent Expert report on the right of self-determination to the 69th session of the General Assembly 2014 and addressing a joint press conference with UK Minister of State for Europe David Lidington in Yerevan today.

According to the Minister, Armenia has always stated that the exercise of right of self-determination of nations can benefit democracy and human rights protection.

“The international relations system today alongside with 193 UN member states is a result of the realization of that right in the first place. There were only 51 countries at the time UN was set up. Now, the number of UN member states has increased almost 4-fold. Denouncing or ignoring the right of self-determination is the same as confronting evolution. We can definitely say that this important report reiterates Armenia’s and various other countries’ approaches to self-determination of nations”, noted Edward Nalbandian.

The Minister claimed that a country where human rights are protected can’t be against the right of self-determination. In this context, Edward Nalbandian recalled the recent referendum in Scotland.
