Yerevan/Mediamax/. The position of the President of European Parliament Martin Schulz on the Armenian Genocide fully coincides with the resolution adopted by the EP on April 15.

The EP President spokesman Armin Machmer told Mediamax correspondent about it today.

Today, Turkish Today’s Zaman daily quoting its anonymous source in the Turkish government, disseminated information according to which during his phone talk with Turkish Prime Minister, EP President Martin Schulz said that he “understands Ankara's reaction to a vote calling the 1915 mass killing of Armenians a genocide”.

“The President is astonished that PM Davutoğlu quoted from a courtesy phone call which was pre-arranged due to the fact that they were unable to meet during last week's official visit in Ankara. During the phone call where a whole range of issues were discussed, PM Davutoğlu raised the subject of the EP resolution on the Armenian genocide. The position of the President is - as always - the one the Parliament adopts”, the EP President spokesman said to Mediamax.

It should be recalled that under the resolution, the EP reconfirms its 1987 resolution according to which inter alia it recognised that the tragic events that took place in 1915-1917 against the Armenians in the territory of the Ottoman Empire represent a genocide as defined in the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of 1948.
