Yerevan/Mediamax/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russian military base, stationed in Armenia, might be used in fight against ISIS.

“Unfortunately, ISIS has already established in the Middle East and Northern part of Africa without any intention to surrender, but we will definitely destroy them. Nevertheless, currently they are active in Afghanistan and especially its Northern part, areas adjacent to borders of our neighbours and allies. Special Rapid Response Units, provided by CSTO member states, as well as Russian bases, stationed in Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia are always ready to respond correspondingly. We will stick to this priorities unless this “virus” is eliminated,” Lavrov said in an interview to MIR-24 TV.

It is worth noting that the West sometimes circulates an opinion, according to which Russian base in Armenia is dangerous for Turkey, a member of Western coalition against ISIS.

Thus, Former Deputy Spokesman of U.S. State Department Adam Ereli said in the beginning of this year, “Two days before Christmas, as American policymakers were settling into the holidays, Russia quietly signed a sweeping air defense agreement with Armenia, accelerating a growing Russian military buildup that has unfolded largely under the radar”

“A similar Russian deployment on the borders of any other NATO member state would produce an outcry of outrage. Why are we staying silent in the face of this thinly veiled aggression against Turkey? And why are we not speaking up against Armenia for rolling out the red carpet for Putin’s shock troops? Turkey, after all, is a critical ally in the global fight against ISIS and is among the only members of the U.S.-led coalition with bases near strategic ISIS strongholds,” Adam Ereli wrote then.
