UN calls on Azerbaijan to prevent discrimination against Armenians

Yerevan /Mediamax/. UN Human Rights Committee expressed concern about harassment and discrimination against members of the Armenian minority in Azerbaijan.

This was stated in Human Rights Committee Concluding observations on the fourth periodic report of Azerbaijan.

 

“The Committee is concerned about allegations of harassment and discrimination against members of the Armenian minority in Azerbaijan,” the observation reads.

 

UN Human Rights Committee expressed concern about the fact that foreigners with Armenian surnames, regardless of their citizenship, are not allowed to Azerbaijan. The Committee called on official Baku in this context to ensure that foreigners with Armenian surnames

are not denied access to the country on arbitrary and discriminatory bases.

 

The Committee called on Baku to take all necessary measures to prevent and combat the harassment of and discrimination against members of the Armenian minority in Azerbaijan.

 

The Committee also remains concerned about consistent reports of torture and ill-treatment, including of journalists and activists, violations of freedom of speech and restrictions on the exercise of the right to peaceful assembly in practice.
