Yerevan /Mediamax/. OSCE/ODIHR formally opened today an election observation mission for snap parliamentary elections in Armenia on December 9.

Head of the Mission, Ambassador Urszula Gacek told journalists that the mission consists of a core team of 13 election experts, 24 long-term observers and 250 short-term observers to monitor proceedings on election day.

According to her, the ODIHR election observation mission will join efforts with delegations from OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the European Parliament.

“Our team will closely monitor the elections from candidate registration process, campaign activities to resolution of election-related disputes. The mission will observe the elections for their compliance with international standards for democratic elections,” Urszula Gacek said.

The Ambassador noted that the pre-election campaign will last for 12 days, which according to her, is an acceptable period of time for the activity.

“There is no international standard for the duration of pre-election campaign. It is important in this case that the political forces are given equal chances to present their programs and introduce their candidate,” Urszula Gacek remarked.

A statement of preliminary findings and conclusions will be issued on the day after the elections. A final report on the observation of the entire electoral process will be published approximately two months after the completion of the electoral process.
