Yerevan /Mediamax/. Armenia may fully stop AIDS epidemic till 2020.

Director of UNAIDS/HIV Program for Europe and Central Asia Viney Saldana said this in Yerevan today.

It is Viney Saldana's first visit to Armenia. He is accompanying singer and actress, UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador in Europe and Central Asia Vera Brezhneva.

“Armenia’s indices in fighting against AIDS/HIV are impressive. Armenia is one of the rare countries in the region that is not greatly threatened by the epidemics. Your country puts considerable efforts to prevent, diagnose and cure AIDS/HIV. I am sure Armenia will be able to stop the epidemic till 2020”, said the Regional Director.

Armenia started registering AIDS cases from 1988 and up to 2014 October, 1960 AIDS cases have been registered among Armenian citizens. Around 75% of cases in 2012-2013 were conditioned by migration.

About 3700 people with AIDS are currently living in Armenia.

“Labor migration is the main reason of AIDS epidemic in Armenia. Armenian labor migrants who leave for Eastern Europe and Central Asia get infected with AIDS without being aware of it and transmit the infection upon returning to Armenia. I think competent Armenian structures should pay attention to this issue”, said Viney Saldana.

Vera Brezhneva called upon the Armenian society to drop prejudices while treating with people with AIDS so as the latter aren’t afraid to turn to help. “AIDS is not a verdict and it shouldn’t hinder people in Armenia to lead a happy and full life”, she said.
