Yerevan/Mediamax/. Executive Director of Transparency International NGO Varuzhan Hoktanyan said today that the political will displayed by the state’s decision-makers to combat corruption is way more important than the change of a certain persons in this or that body.

Varuzhan Hoktanyan stated it commenting on the decision of the government to set up a PM headed Anti-Corruption Board and Expert Commission to combat corruption.

“I see an institutional issue here. To what extent will corruption be prevented or reduced if other persons are involved in that body. We need political will”, said Varuzhan Hoktanyan.

He specified that corruption can be reduced by changing power in the country, demonstrating political will, or in case of democratization and transparency and accountability of the authorities.

According to Varuzhan Hoktanyan, the corruption perception index in Armenia is 36. The Corruption Perceptions Index scores countries on a scale from 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean).

“Countries scoring below 50 are regarded as the most highly corrupted states. Armenia’s corruption perception index shows that the corruption situation has entered a stagnation phase in Armenia. The situation does not deteriorate but it does not improve either”, said Varuzhan Hoktanyan.
