SIS: Police used violence against journalists

Yerevan /Mediamax/. The Special Investigation Service (SIS) of Armenia has stated that the police used violence against journalists and civilians protesting against rising electricity prices.

It is said in the press release disseminated by the SIS.

 

“The study of the programs, materials and videos published in mass media brought forth information on that the persons conducting special public service overtly went beyond their powers during special operations aimed at dispersing the rally and the strike-in organized by “No to Plunder” initiative protesting against electricity price rise on Baghramyan Avenue on June 23 and on subsequent days and used violence against the protesters and a number of journalists covering the events on Baghramyan Avenue, Freedom Square, adjacent areas and various police departments in Armenia,  caused bodily injuries and damaged or destroyed the latters’ recording equipment, thus impeding the legal professional activity of journalists considerably harming the rights and legal interests of persons and organizations and the legal interests of the society and the state,” reads the SIS press release.

 

The Investigation Service noted that a criminal proceeding was instituted on use of violence, going beyond the functions, hindering the legal professional activity of journalists through the abuse of power of officers, and deliberate destruction or damage of another person’s property.
