EU supports disaster risk reduction in Armenia

Yerevan /Mediamax/. The Programme Supporting Disaster Risk Reduction Amongst Vulnerable Communities and Institutions in South Caucasus was launched today in Armenian Ministry of Emergency Situations.

According to the press release of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Armenia, the programme will be held until the end of 2017. It aims to reduce vulnerability of communities and intensify their resilience to natural disasters and man-made hazards.

 

The programme will be held in Shirak, Lori, Aragatsotn, Gegharkunik, Tavush, Armavir and Syunik marzes and Yerevan, targeting primarily children, women and disabled persons. It also aims to improve capacities of school and pre-school institutions, which will reduce disaster risk.

 

The programme is financed by the European Commission’s Humanitarian aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO) in the framework of Disaster Preparedness programme (DIPECHO).

 

In Armenia, the programme is implemented by Armenian Red Cross Society and Oxfam Armenia in cooperation with OxYGen Foundation, UNICEF Armenia, the UN Development Programme and Save the Children.
