Yerevan /Mediamax/. Iranian Studies expert Vardan Voskanyan believes that Iran continues to view Armenia as the most important country in the South Caucasus.

“Iranian Ambassador’s statement that President of Iran scheduled a visit to Armenia soon shows that Iran is interested in strengthening relations with Armenia today more than ever,” the expert said.

According to him, Iran turned its attention towards the South Caucasus after the lifting of sanctions nearly a year ago, “trying to develop relations with all parties.”

“Armenia remains the most important partner for Iran both politically and economically. Iran views Armenia as a country with great potential regarding North-South Road and Armenia-Iran Railway project,” Vardan Voskanyan observed. He noted that the construction of the road North-South should be accelerated, as “Iranian transport operators experience significant difficulties while passing through Turkey, and Iran is interested to have an exit to the Black Sea through Armenia and Georgia.”

He remarked that Armenia also took measures to strengthen ties with Iran.

“The cancellation of visa regime was the most important step, which showed that Armenia and Iran have established high-level relations based on trust,” he said.
