Lydian Armenia in cooperation with Embassy of Lithuania in Armenia realized the project of introducing Europe’s road traffic safety experience in the communities adjacent to Amulsar.

Within the project, Lydian Armenia holds a range of events dedicated to road traffic safety in the communities adjacent to Amulsar, taking into account the fact that the increase of economic activity in the neighbouring communities along with construction of the mine will also lead to increase of traffic.

Lydian Armenia replaced broken traffic lights at Jermuk city entrance and school with new digital ones, and installed traffic signs in the mentioned places, as they were absent before.

The company purchased school backpacks equipped with reflective belts from Lithuanian USB Safe Reflector company, which have been an obligatory requirement for school backpacks or uniforms in a number of European countries for many years.

On September 1 and 2, Lydian Armenia and Lithuanian Embassy gifted around 600 such backpacks to schoolchildren in Jermuk, Gndevaz and Kechut, and Lithuanian experts Egle Namanite and Živilė Janauskaite held a workshop on road traffic safety at the schools, explaining to children how to use the backpacks and reflective belts.

Lithuanian Ambassador to Armenia Erikas Petrikas noted that this is the third year that they implement a road traffic safety event in Armenia.

“We have special relations with Armenia. In 2015, we founded the Lithuanian-Armenian Intergovernmental Economic Commission, within which we review around 14 fields of collaboration. This project is a small water drop that is quite important for the safety of children. Years ago, when such a project was implemented in Lithuania, I was one of the first critics, and now I’m one of the project’s supporters as I understood its importance. Thanks to this project, the number of deaths caused by car accidents substantially decreased in Lithuania. I would be happy to see the day come in Armenia when police officers stop citizens in the streets not to admonish them or charge a fine, but to provide them with a reflective belt.”

Erikas Petrikas thanked Lydian Armenia for cooperation and for taking Lithuanian experience as an example.

“Public safety is a priority for our company. Amulsar gold mine workers know how much we care about the health and safety of each of them. Today we try to introduce standards of safety to our daily life. This project also comes from Lydian Armenia’s social responsibility policy. We are sure that the project will facilitate safety for children, teach the society basic rules of road traffic safety and found a new culture of road traffic safety,” said Lydian Armenia General Manager Hayk Aloyan.

Jermuk Mayor Vadan Hovhannisyan expressed his sincere gratitude to the initiators of the project.

The headmasters of the participating schools also thanked the initiators on behalf of the teaching staff, students and their parents, expressing the hope that educational institutions of the communities will continue to be the center of Lydian Armenia’s attention.

“There are many organizations in Vayots Dzor, but we receive such attention only from Lydian Armenia,” noted Head of Jermuk High School Armine Arsenyan.

At this stage of the project aimed at road traffic safety in communities adjacent to Amulsar gold mine, Lydian Armenia invested AMD 7 mln, promising that the project will also be applied in other communities near Amulsar.

Mine construction in Amulsar has been launched recently. For the present, it is considered the biggest investment in Armenia with capacity of USD 370 mln. The company plans to launch gold production in two years.

It is worth mentioning that a year ago, on September 1, 2015, the experts of Lithuanian Road Administration under Ministry of Transport and Communications conducted an open lecture on traffic safety at School No 8 in Artik.
