Yerevan /Mediamax/. Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan hailed Swiss government’s decision to appeal the decision of the European Court of the Human Rights’ (ECHR) on “Perincek v. Switzerland” case passed on December 17, 2013.

Chairman of the Workers' Party (Turkey) enrolled in activities against the international recognition of Armenian Genocide Dogu Perincek described the Armenian Genocide as an “international lie” at one of the symposia held in Switzerland over 2005, Mediamax recalls. In 2008, the Court of Switzerland sentenced Dogu to 90-days of suspended imprisonment or to a fine amounting to CHF 3000. But on December 17, 2013, the ECHR satisfied Dogu Perincek’s suit against Switzerland stating that Switzerland has violated Article 10 of Human Rights Convention – freedom of speech.

“Everybody knows that Switzerland has always been one of the most active human rights defenders and has vigorously struggled against race discrimination, xenophobia generating structures and people; on the whole, it’s one of the active states struggling against the phenomenon, and we expected Switzerland to pass a positive and right decision and it did. IT was en expected and anticipated decision. Of course, Swiss authorities played a huge role in the decision-making process. The Swiss government passed the decision on its own, but we should also highly assess the role of the international structures, the contribution and the approach of various individuals to the European court’s decision as well as their appeal to the Swiss government and the activities launched by the International Association of Genocide Scholars, various individuals and infrastructures”, said Serzh Sargsyan within the consultation held during his visit to the Ministry of Health.

The Armenian President said he is sure the European Court of the Human Rights will not pass a decision which will appear offensive for people who have survived the genocide and will not disregard the memory of the millions of innocent victims.

“I am convinced the Swiss government will be consistent to its decision. It’s out of question why this issue interests us. On the other hand, the issue is related to the fact that by such a decision the European Court claims of flaws in the Swiss justice. But we all know that this country has passed a long way and has set high values, thus the Swiss people should prove the integrity of their justice system and in general, the integrity of their entire state system”, said the Armenian President.
