At the meeting with the students and academic staff of the American University of Armenia (AUA) on January 30, President of Armenian Benevolent General Union (ABGU) Berge Setrakian spoke about the current state of Armenia, its challenges and future.

We present some excerpts from Berge Setrakian’s speech:

Armenia’s challenges

It’s not that we lack challenges. The present-day world faces most serious challenges – see what’s going on in the Middle East or Ukraine. We should confront our challenges and seek solutions.

Of course, there are many things that raise concern in Armenia, and of course, we are not happy with the state corruption. But at the same time we are realistic and there is much to be proud of as well. The political regimes and parties come and go but we are involved in long-term programs aimed at building our country. We did not cease to support Armenia even in the darkest days of the communism.

AGBU does not commit to subjecting the Armenian government to public criticism inasmuch as we are not an opposition force. That is why every Armenian government that has come to power since its independence has trusted us. And I should assure you that we speak about and discuss with the authorities all the tasks and challenges Armenia faces. We should persist with our struggle for the better future of Armenia and I remain optimistic about that.

Let’s forget about charity for a moment. Presently, one of AGBU’s main areas is to engage and work with such individuals as Ruben Vardanyan, Sam Simonian and Eduardo Eurnekian – these are people who spare no effort to help Armenia. One of the things we consider is how we can create new jobs in Armenia. All our efforts are committed to this end today.

Our dream is to build strong Armenia. As Diaspora representative, I should say that the Diaspora won’t be able to survive for a long while if Armenia does not become a subject of pride for us.

Role of youth

The youth should assume responsibility for the future of Armenia. I believe bright future awaits Armenia but it requires time. I know many people who are committed to that and you should also abide by it.

Repatriation

We should be able to encourage retired Armenians from the U.S. and other countries to move to Armenia. Beyond a shadow of doubt, it should have certain social, economic and logical grounds and can be realized in case of relevant conditions – we should be able to ensure their social incomes. You might object saying why we should support the return of elderly people to Armenia. But let’s not forget they will bring money to their country and their children and grandchildren will also come to Armenia with their parents. It’s one of the areas of our work today.

Art

Art and music are the soul of our nation. In early 90s, AGBU was providing financing for the Armenian State Philharmonic Orchestra as well. Many people were laying strictures on us saying people are starving but you are supporting culture. But would the soul of the Armenian nation be the same had it been left starving?

Heroes

We need heroes. Aram Khachaturian is a hero. Aram Khachaturian and Charles Aznavour have both won Armenia greater fame than hundreds of lawyers.
