Yerevan /Mediamax/. The United States, the National Security Service (NSS) and Armenian Border Guard (ABG) held a ceremony today to mark the completion of a two-year cooperative effort aimed at reducing the threat of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) along Armenia's northern border with Georgia.

U.S. Ambassador to Armenia John A. Heffern attended the event, as well as NSS deputy director Arzuman Harutyunyan and NSS Border Guard Troops Commander Major-General Armen Abrahamyan.

The Armenia project was funded by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) Cooperative Threat Reduction Program.

The project provided equipment for WMD detection and identification, communications, surveillance, mobility, tactical infrastructure and post and patrol operations and conducted training for the use and maintenance of the equipment.

The installation of radio repeater equipment along the northern border greatly improves the communications capabilities of the ABG between its patrols, outposts and regional command facilities. Night vision devices provided by the project enhance the ABG’s capacity to operate around the clock.
