Yerevan/Mediamax/. Acting Foreign Minister of Armenia Edward Nalbandian said that it had been three decades that Armenia faced challenges regarding refugee admission.

He stated the following during the first session of the United Nations Summit for Refugees and Migrants, while chairing it:

“In the end of 1980s and in the beginning of 1990s, Armenians underwent ethnic massacres, as well as deprivation of their homeland, committed by Azerbaijan, and found their shelter in Armenia. In the beginning of April Azerbaijan once again unleashed large-scale aggression against Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, which resulted in losses within civilians and a new wave of displacement,” Edward Nalbandian said.

“Today thousands of Armenians together with other Middle East nations again have to leave their lands. More than 20 000 Armenians from Syria alone found their refuge in Armenia. By population ratio Armenia is the second country in Europe admitting Syrian refugees. Thus, Armenia knows from its own experience what it is like to be a refugee and to give shelter to the displaced,” Edward Nalbadian noted.
