Yerevan /Mediamax/. Armenian diplomat criticised Azerbaijan’s recent aggression towards Artsakh at the UN Commission on Population and Development session.

At the 49th session of UN Commission on Population and Development on April 13 in New York, representative of Azerbaijan touched upon NK conflict and the issue of refugees and displaced persons it resulted in.

Exercising the right of reply, the representative of Armenia Sofya Simonyan, responding to a statement made by Azerbaijan’s delegate, said the latter had used a United Nations forum to engage in another “blame game” concerning Nagorno-Karabakh.

According to Armenian diplomat, during large-scale military offensive against Nagorno-Karabakh a few days ago, Azerbaijan had violated the ceasefire agreement, undermined ongoing peace talks and grossly violated international humanitarian law and international human rights law.

Sofya Simonyan told during the meeting about Azerbaijan’s indiscriminate shelling of civilian settlements and barbaric acts against the elderly and children.

According to her, on 10 April, in the presence of the representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross, it had been established that all bodies of Armenian soldiers transferred by the Azerbaijani side had signs of torture and mutilation.

“Those actions blatantly violated international humanitarian law and human rights law, and were in line with the atrocity standards of Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and other terrorist organizations,” said Armenian diplomat.

She also reminded that while Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh had agreed to the creation of a mechanism to investigate ceasefire violations, Azerbaijan had continuously refused.

According to her, atrocities and war crimes committed by Azerbaijani Armed forces are documented facts, and the Azerbaijani leadership is directly responsible for them.
