Yerevan /Mediamax/. The presentation of “History of Republic of Turkey” textbook was held in Yerevan today.

The authors of the textbook are turkologists Ruben Safrastyan, Ruben Melkonyan, Artur Dumanyan, Vahram Ter-Matevosyan, Hakob Chakryan and Anush Hovhannisyan. The textbook was published by Yerevan State University (YSU) and the Institute of Oriental Studies of the National Academy of Sciences.

YSU rector Aram Simonyan noted that the Faculty of Oriental Studies at YSU lacked a similar textbook to date, and the students basically had to study using textbooks published during the Soviet period. Aram Simonyan noted that such a comprehensive textbook is important in political terms as well.

Armenian Minister of Education and Science Armen Ashotyan stated that the level of Turkology increases in Armenia year in and year out, which is highly important considering that the level of Armenian Studies faces a rapid growth in Turkey.

In his turn, co-author of the book, Deputy Dean of Yerevan State University’s Faculty of Oriental Studies Ruben Melkonyan said that it’s an objective and historic book encompassing the History of Turkey from 1918 to date and presenting the main episodes of Turkey’s foreign and domestic policy, the ideological bases, pivotal political parties and significant political figures.

The book also depicts the main phases and consequences of the policy of persecution and pressures conducted toward ethnic and religious minorities as well as the recent developments of Armenian-Turkish relations.

Ruben Melkonyan informed that they received an offer from Saint Petersburg to translate the textbook into Russian by April 24, 2015, and to distribute the book in educational institutions in Russia. In his turn, Armen Ashotyan came up with the proposal to translate the book into Turkish and to make it available on Internet for Turkish students “to have an opportunity of alternative” noting that the Ministry is ready to support it.
