Yerevan/Mediamax/. The German Bundestag will discuss the issue of recognition of the Armenian Genocide on June 2.

Deutsche Welle reports that the issue has been included in the Bundestag agenda for June 2 titled item No. 5: “Remembrance and Commemoration of the Genocide of Armenians and Other Christian Minorities 101 Years Ago.”

A CDU-CSU parliamentary spokeswoman confirmed that the session would go ahead. According to her, the text of the resolution is ready, having been prepared by the Christian Socialist Union, the Greens and the Social Democrats.

Nevertheless, there will not be a roll-call vote on the declaration on June 2. This means that the members of German parliament will not be obliged to attend. The resolution will be voted on by a show of hands.

DW reports that the majority of foreign policy specialists from the relevant parties of Bundestag have given a clear signal that they will support the resolution.

“There may well be trouble with Ankara, but the Bundestag does not allow itself to be blackmailed by a despot like Mr. Erdogan,” said Cem Ozdemir, the Greens co-chair of Turkish descent and the author of the resolution on recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

According to German media, the resolution not only mentions the Armenian Genocide, but also refers to the role that Germany played in this crime.

The Left party and the Greens have both demanded not only that the term “genocide” be used but that Germany apologize.

Mediamax reminds that the German Bundestag put off the discussion on the recognition of the Armenain Genocide at the session on Apil 24, 2015, where German Chancellor Angela Merkel took part as well.

President of the Bundestag Norbert Lammert stated at the two-hour session on that day that “what happened to Armenians during WWI was genocide” and “there cannot be real peace if the justice has not been restored for the generations of the victims.”

The resolution on the Armenian Genocide was presented at the Bundestag in February 2016 as well, but was postponed in order not to sabotage negotiations on the refugee issue as the European Union sought a deal with Turkey.
