Yerevan, Mediamax. Director of the Holy See’s Press Office, Father Federico Lombardi concluded the first day of Pope Francis’s visit to Armenia on the evening of June 24.

We present the most important extracts from his news conference.

The Pope added the word “genocide” to his speech at the last moment

During his speech at Armenian presidential residence, Pope Francis used both “Mets Eghern” and “Genocide” definitions to describe the mass killings of 1915. The Pope frequently stated that the massacres were a genocide. We never denied it, and His Holiness saw no reason to omit the word “genocide” today.

The Pope approved his speech for the evening beforehand, and the original version didn’t include the word “genocide”. It is undeniable that he decided to add the word “genocide” to the speech. He though about it and included that word and certain other expressions. There was no pressure on the Pope from any party to make this decision. He prepared the speech and gave it to us, and we released it to the media. However, we always say that the Pope usually makes changes in his speeches at the last moment. We always recommended being ready for surprises, as he can change something in his speech and even shock some people.

I called you to always pay attention to the words of the Pope. I recommend the same now. He has something to say tomorrow as well.

On Turkey’s response

I cannot speak on behalf of Turkey. I can only repeat what the Pope said, and he always speaks of peace and dialogue between nations. During this visit, he spoke with the same attitude. There are many Armenians, who have good relations with Turks, and the opposite is true as well. There are much more people who want peace, than the opposite. We need to learn lessons from the past not to repeat the mistakes of the past.

The Pope’s visit will bring many Christians pilgrims to Armenia

The Pope has deep respect for Armenian culture, Christian past, and history. You have an unbelievable history and wisdom. I think that the Pope’s visit will reveal the spiritual wealth of Armenian nation to many people, and I am sure that many Christians will go on a pilgrimage to Armenia after this visit.

On Armenian apricots

Armenian apricot is famous all over the world. When we reached Etchmiadzin today, we found a tray filled with this wonderful fruit in one of our rooms. We enjoyed it very much. The Pope is well aware of Armenian apricots and is very fond of them.
